Mafia 3 has been in the making for some time now, but we had no idea about what it was going to look like. A 12-minute gameplay trailer has been revealed, and it shows great promise.

The first Mafia game was released back in 2002, just in time to get compared with Grand Theft Auto III. They were both part of a major new genre that was just sprouting its wings: open world games. The biggest difference between the games was that Mafia was more story-oriented, and it didn't really tell the people who were playing it to go through the city and do other things.

The entire gameplay was built around the story and its progression. In the long run, it turned out that Mafia and Grand Theft Auto III were not similar at all. In any case, Mafia was good enough to warrant a continuation, many years later. It didn't have the same success, but it based the gameplay on a powerful story as well.

Mafia 3 is no longer done by the same people

The two Mafia games were developed by Illusion Softworks, who later became 2K Czech. Now, the third game in the series will be helmed by a new studio named Hangar 13. In fact, this new studio has a lot of people from 2K Marin, who worked on Bioshock 2 and a few high-profile titles.

The developers have a short walk through the game with the fine folks at IGN, and so far it looks good, albeit it's not all that impressive. 12 minutes might sound like a long time, but it's not nearly enough to figure out if the story is any good.

You can check the video below if you want to see the new game in detail. There is no launch date attached to this one, but we do know that it's coming to PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.
