Another project is now gone from the open source world

m0n0wall was a BSD firewall operating system that's been around for quite some time. It was recognized as one of the best, but there is a reason why we are now using past tense for it. The developer has stopped development and dropped the project.

Linux systems are not the only ones used for development and there are plenty of distros out there that use BSD as the base. In fact, many of the firewall projects are based on BSD. Just like Linux, BSD is also very stable and secure, which makes it the perfect candidate for a firewall. It might not be the most friendly base, but that doesn't mean that it's not a popular one.

m0n0wall has been around for many years, but it hasn't made front page news. It was an excellent project and the developer dedicated a lot of time to it. Now that project is dead and the developer has moved to greener pastures.

m0n0wall is no more

These past few weeks we've seen quite a few projects go underground, including Crunchbang for example. Now it's followed by m0n0wall, which doesn't seem to have a future. Crunchbang has been resurrected, but it remains to be seen if the same happens to this firewall distro.

"Therefore, today I announce that the m0n0wall project has officially ended. No development will be done anymore, and there will be no further releases. The forums and the mailing list will be frozen at the end of this month. All the contents of the website, repository, downloads, mailing list and forum will be archived in a permanent location on the web so that they remain accessible indefinitely to anyone who might be interested in them," said Manuel Kasper, the developer of m0n0wall.

In the meantime, you can download m0n0wall and see what it is all about. It still works and it will work for quite some time, although there won't be any kind of support for it.
