Valve surprises everyone with a new sale

The Lunar New Year Sale has just arrived on Steam, and there are now thousands of games discounted, with the campaign set to last until February 12.

The community usually learns about these sales ahead of time, but it looks like this one got under the radar. The main reason is that Valve has never done this before, especially so soon after the previous campaign, but they might be changing their policy.

The Steam library has been getting bigger and bigger, so promoting games is becoming a real problem. A lot of publishers and developers want to be on the first page, but when your promotion campaign has almost 9,000 titles, that's impossible. So Valve is now trying different solutions to make games more visible.

No more flash sales

Valve dropped flash sales, which were quite popular, and it was a good decision. They've reported that the winter sales have been much better since then, so we now have a new model.

The games are separated into various categories, like racing games, card games, puzzles, and so on. There is now a small drawing on the main page with a text and a question. Choosing one of the answers will move the player to a particular category. It is really simple, and it helps them showcase some titles that are not all that visible.

Here are some of the most popular titles for today: XCOM2, Fallout 4, Grand Theft Auto V, American Truck Simulator, Counter-Strike Complete, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Rust, ARK: Survival Evolved, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Rocket League, Football Manager 2016, Steam Controller, NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 4, and Slime Rancher.

It's worth noting that a couple of games on this list are not even discounted right now, and we've also spotted the Steam Controller in there.

Enjoy shopping on Steam.
