Daedalic Entertainment, a publisher known for its point & click adventure games, announced last year it has teamed up with Middle-earth Enterprises to develop and publish The Lord of the Rings – Gollum, an action-adventure game set for release in 2021 on PC and consoles.

Earlier this week, the German studio revealed the first teaser trailer for the upcoming game, and while it doesn't show any gameplay footage, we can't be more excited to experience Daedalic's take on a hugely popular franchise like The Lord of the Rings.

More importantly, Daedalic promised that its new game will “remain true to the vision laid out in J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and will also explore new events and details related to Gollum's journey.”

It's probably a hint that while the game will remain faithful to the books, it will tell new stories that The Lord of the Rings fans haven't been exposed to yet. Although no relevant details about gameplay have been revealed by Daedalic, the developers exclusively spoke to IGN about the game's “mixture of stealth-action and interactive narrative gameplay.”

From what we understand, The Lord of the Rings – Gollum will most play as a stealth action game rather than an action-adventure title. Another important aspect revealed by developers is that players will have to make choices as the creature's two personalities of Smeagol and Gollum fight for control.

The fine folks at Daedalic also said that Gollum won't use weapons. Instead, he can distract enemies using throwables, but he will also be able to use the environment to his advantage. The best way to describe The Lord of the Rings – Gollum is a mix between stealth and vertical climbing parkour.

If you want a reference you might think of it as similar to Prince of Persia. It is mostly a non-combat game, but Gollum will be able to stealthily take out enemies. However, this will not be easy and always come with big risks. We want players to carefully weigh these encounters. After all, Gollum’s strengths lie in cunning not combat.”

The Lord of the Rings – Gollum is scheduled for release in 2021 on PC and all relevant console platforms at that time, and we can't be more excited about this one.
