After kicking off the development of Linspire 8.0, Roberto J. Dohnert informs Softpedia today on the general availability of the Freespire 3.0.9 Linux-based operating system.

Freespire 3.0.9 is a small incremental update of the free and open-source GNU/Linux distribution that includes all the latest security and software updates released upstream until June 11, 2018. It also introduces new light and dark modes, a full instance of the Calligra office suite, and replaces Mozilla Thunderbird with Kontact.

The developers recommend all users running the Freespire 3.0 operating system series on their personal computers to run a system-wide update if they want to upgrade to Freespire 3.0.9 and receive all the latest changes. On the other hand, new users are encouraged to download the Freespire 3.0.9 ISO image.

Linspire 8.0 "Albacore" Alpha 1 debuts based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

Based on the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) operating system, the forthcoming Linspire 8.0 Linux OS just entered development over the weekend with the release of the first Alpha milestone, which gives users an early look at who the operating system will look like and what features it'll incorporate.

"This release is the beginning stages of our new Linspire release scheduled for a Christmas release. This is a rudimentary build and some things may not work as intended so expect some bugs. This release is NOT set in stone and you can expect numerous changes between now and final release," said Roberto J. Dohnert.

Linspire 8.0 Alpha 1 highlights include revamped look and feel with new light & dark modes, MATE 1.20.1 as default desktop environment, App Store with support for Snap and Flatpak packages, Google Chrome 67 as default web browser, LibreOffice 6.0.4 as default office suite, and Mozilla Thunderbird 52.7 as default email client.

You can download the Linspire 8.0 Alpha 1 ISO image right now if you want to take it for a test drive on your personal computer, but, as the developer noted above, you shouldn't use it on a production machine. The final Linspire 8.0 "Albacore" release is expected to hit the streets on December 12, 2018, along with Freespire 4.0.
