The migration will take several years, company says

Business social networking service LinkedIn will fully migrate to Microsoft Azure to power all of its services, the company announced this week.

LinkedIn’s takeover was one of the biggest acquisitions for software giant Microsoft, and despite the growth that it recorded in the last couple of years, the service was still running on its very own cloud infrastructure.

Microsoft Azure, which also keeps growing every quarter, has previously been used by LinkedIn for a series of dedicated tasks, like video post-delivery, machine translation, and inappropriate content filters.

However, LinkedIn will now be powered by Azure from one end to another, all when a migration process supposed to complete in a few years comes to an end.

Migration to take years to complete

“Today’s technology landscape makes the need for constant reinvention paramount, especially as we look to scale our infrastructure to drive the next stage of LinkedIn’s growth. With the incredible member and business growth we’re seeing, we’ve decided to begin a multi-year migration of all LinkedIn workloads to the public cloud,” Mohak Shroff, Senior Vice President of Engineering at LinkedIn, says.

Needless to say, the transition to Azure make sense for LinkedIn, not only because it’s owned by Microsoft, but also from a business perspective. The service keeps growing at a pace that can no longer be handled by its own infrastructure, and Azure has the power to support it moving forward without the need for any compromise.

“Moving to Azure will give us access to a wide array of hardware and software innovations, and unprecedented global scale. This will position us to focus on areas where we can deliver unique value to our members and customers. The cloud holds the future for us and we are confident that Azure is the right platform to build on for years to come,” Shroff noted.
