14 DAY TRIAL // LG’s current flagship, the G6, didn’t come with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 platform, because all the initial supply of the powerful chipset was hogged by Samsung, and LG chose to release the G6 sooner than wait for the Galaxy S8 to be released.
Therefore, the G6 comes with last year’s Snapdragon 821 platform, and not the Snapdragon 835 chipset which is featured on many flagship smartphones released this year. It seems that LG won’t make the same move with next year’s flagship.
Reports from Korea reveal that the smartphone maker has already partnered with Qualcomm in order to start development on the new Snapdragon 845 and make sure that the chipset will be featured in the upcoming G7 flagship, arriving next year.
LG has been working with Qualcomm since May this year
It seems that the two companies started development work in May this year and an industry official revealed that LG needs to include the new chipset on its flagship phone, as “emerging virtual reality and augmented reality solutions require more powerful data processing capability.”
This means that the upcoming G7 will sport more advanced features, compared to what we’ve seen on this year’s G6. The Snapdragon 845 will be manufactured on the 7-nanometer process and will be 30% more powerful than the current 835 platform. Still, reports from earlier this year have indicated that Samsung will also include the upcoming chipset on next year’s Galaxy S9 flagship.
But until the G7 arrives next year, LG must announce the V30, which is rumored to be the first LG OLED smartphone. An early design of the new device recently leaked showing an interesting slide-out secondary screen, which can be used in multiple ways.
It could double as an on-screen keyboard and allow more content to be displayed on the primary screen. The V30 will run Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 platform and is expected to feature at least 4GB of RAM. LG will most likely announce the new phone in September.
