One of the most expected smartphones in the first half of the year, the LG G5 will make its debut on the market this spring.

Even though the South Korean company did not confirm when exactly its flagship smartphone would be officially unveiled, rumor has it that G5 might be announced in late February.

LG G5 will directly compete with Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S7, which will be unveiled around the same date as the former.

But the G5 won't be the only flagship smartphone launched by LG this year. Although the company usually released one top handset during the previous years, LG confirmed that due to increasing competition in the smartphone market, it will launch two flagship models in 2016.

By launching two flagship smartphones this year and using a more cost-competitive value chain, LG hopes to improve profitability this year. It remains to be seen whether or not LG's forecast will be accurate.

“The smartphone marketplace is expected to be increasingly competitive in 2016 due to anticipated premium models from competitors and further price competition within the mass-tier space.

“The introduction of two new flagship models and a more cost-competitive value chain is expected to improve profitability in 2016,” says LG in a press release.

LG reports slight increase in smartphone sales

In other news, LG announced a 12% increase in smartphone sales from the previous quarter and unchanged from the same period a year ago, thanks to the improved sales in North America.

Also, the South Korean company confirmed it had shipped a total of 15.3 million smartphones in the quarter contributing to a total of 59.7 million units in 2015, a slight increase from the 59.1 million shipped in 2014.

LG Mobile has already teased the launch of a new product on February 21, at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016. Although many claim the company might unveil the LG G5 next month, we have no confirmation yet.
