The company has no plans to launch any new devices

Here is some grim news for Motorola fans in China. It looks like Lenovo, Motorola's parent company, is determined to kill the DROID brand in this country.

The good news is Motorola DROID smartphones will continue to be launched in other countries like the United States.

Although many DROID handsets are just similar versions of other international smartphones, but personalized for specific countries and/or carriers, the DROID brand made a name for itself since the launch of Android.

It would be very sad to see the brand disappear for no apparent reason. Even though the information hasn't been officially confirmed by Lenovo, XiaomiToday reports blog site Webio got a reply from the Chinese company's president, Chen Xudong concerning this issue.

According to Xudong, “DROID series has no further plans to introduce or maintain new smartphones.”

The answer he provided only applies for the Chinese market, so fans in the United States can rest assured that Motorola will continue to launch DROID smartphones in the country.

DROID phones will still be launched in the US

In fact, the US-based company already has two new smartphones in the pipeline which should be available on the market by the end of the year: DROID Maxx 2 and DROID Turbo 2.

Both will be available at Verizon Wireless, but other US carriers might add one or both devices to their portfolio as well.

Keep in mind that both DROID smartphones are in fact US versions of Motorola Moto X Play and Moto X Force, respectively. However, they might come with slightly different specs and modified design, which is what makes the DROID brand special.

Even though Lenovo does not seem to have any intention of killing the DROID brand in the US, we can't help but wonder how long it will take to do that now that China won't be getting it.
