We've already reported last year about a joint event scheduled by Lenovo and Google for January 7, 2016, which was supposed to announce a new partnership for Project Tango.

Google is already working on the project with other companies like NVIDIA, Intel, Qualcomm, and even LG. As one of the largest handset makers in the world, Lenovo would make an excellent addition to the list of Project Tango partners.

Earlier today, Lenovo and Google confirmed they would work together for the release of a Tango-enabled smartphones, which should be available sometime in Summer 2016.

There will be three companies working to bring the Tango smartphone to market: Lenovo, Google and Qualcomm.

As part of the partnership between the three companies, developers are invited to submit their application proposals to help grow Project Tango app ecosystem.

If you are a developer and you who wish to present your app for Project Tango, keep in mind that you can only do that until February 15, 2016.

Project Tango gains traction by teaming up with a giant handset maker

For those unfamiliar with Project Tango, here is a short recap of what this is all about. First of all, the technology behind the project is meant to provide a mobile device with the ability to navigate the physical world similar to how we do as humans.

In order for that to happen, Project Tango uses advanced computer vision, depth sensing, and motion tracking to create on-screen 3D experiences, which should allow users to explore their physical environments via their Tango-enabled device.

The good news is Project Tango device will also work indoors, something the GPS-enabled devices aren't capable of at the moment.

Last but not least, with the help of a unique sensor inside Project Tango devices, users will be able to capture the 3D dimensions of the room and give measurements that can be used for various purposes.
