14 DAY TRIAL // Despite rumors of a yawn-inducing October 2 event that Microsoft may be holding for Surface announcements, it looks like at least a new-generation device may see daylight.
The Surface Studio 2, which represents the second model of Microsoft’s all-in-one desktop PC, is allegedly ready for launch, and a Geekbench benchmark provides us with an early look at the technical specifications.
Unfortunately, if this leak is accurate, the Surface Studio 2 is likely to come with disappointing specs, showing that Microsoft isn’t really planning to make it a monster in terms of hardware.
In fact, this could just a cost-saving measure, as adding the latest-generation hardware could increase the final price of the device, but at least customers should be given more choices in this regard.
According to this benchmark, the Surface Studio 2 comes with an Intel Core i7-7820HQ processor, which is part of the seventh generation Kaby Lake chip, and not of Intel’s most recent eight generation. The processor is paired with 32GB RAM, though there’s a chance that Microsoft will also offer 8GB and 16GB versions.
Possible launch on October 2
Seeing Microsoft not embracing the latest-generation processors for its top-of-the-range product is certainly surprising, but this is something that the company has done with the first model too.
Two years ago when it launched the original Surface Studio, Microsoft installed NVIDIA GeForce 965M and 980M graphic cards, which represented a massive setback in terms of video.
For the time being, however, it’s not known if Microsoft will use the October 2 event to take the wraps off the second-generation Surface Studio, but the fact that the conference won’t be live-streamed may be a sign that not even the software giant sees this as a major announcement.
