Users in more countries receive the new firmware version

Microsoft has recently released the first firmware update for Lumia 950 and 950 XL, but since its availability has depended on carriers, only some users have actually received it.

Starting today, however, the new firmware version is available worldwide, as users in at least two countries have confirmed that their Lumia 950 and 950 XL are getting the update.

Both the United Kingdom and Ireland seem to be receiving the new firmware version number 01078.00027.15506.020xx, which could be a sign that, despite the fact that carriers are still involved in the firmware distribution process, Microsoft wants them to move faster than before.

It’s not a secret that in the past it took many months before a certain firmware update reached Windows Phone devices across the world, and the best example is Lumia Denim. The update was first rolled out to a number of users in December 2014, but due to the fact that carriers weren’t really eager to release it to their customers, some had to wait until mid-2015 to get it.

That seems to change with the arrival of Windows 10 Mobile, and while OS updates no longer need carrier approval, firmware update availability still depends on the network service provider. But Microsoft clearly wants its partners to complete testing faster and thus allow users to get the new firmware versions sooner.

Fixes and changes

The new Lumia 950 and 950 XL firmware version brings stability and performance improvements, as well as enhancements to the SD memory card support and automatic display brightness settings.

It also includes a couple of fixes for a camera bug that was causing noisy images in low-light conditions for some users and an issue causing stripes to show up while playing videos recorded with the phone’s camera. To download the new update, go to Settings > Update & security > Phone update > Check for updates.
