14 DAY TRIAL // Kubuntu's Rik Mills informs Softpedia about the availability of the recently released KDE Plasma 5.12.3 LTS desktop environment bugfix update in the backports PPA repository of Kubuntu and Ubuntu 17.10 operating systems.
The KDE Project released earlier this week the third bugfix update to their long-term supported KDE Plasma 5.12 desktop environment, and Ubuntu/Kubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) users are among the first to install it. The update brings an impressive list of improvements for the Plasma Discover package manager.
While Kubuntu/Ubuntu 17.10 users are already receiving the most recent stable KDE Plasma packages, it looks like Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic Beaver) early adopters will have to wait a little longer for the new updates, as the upcoming operating system is currently in Beta freeze and the repositories are blocked.
"Testers of 18.04 Bionic Beaver will need to be patient as the Ubuntu archive is currently in Beta 1 candidate freeze for our packages, but we hope to update the packages there once the Beta 1 is released," reads the announcement. "The PPA will also continue to receive bugfix updates to Plasma 5.12 when they become available."
Here's how to update to KDE Plasma 5.12.3 LTS on Kubuntu 17.10
If you use Kubuntu 17.10 or Ubuntu 17.10 on your personal computer and you're interested in updating to the latest KDE Plasma 5.12.3 LTS release, you will have to run a couple of commands in a terminal emulator. First, you need to install the Kubuntu Backports PPA using the first command listed below, and then fully upgrade your installation using the second command.
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports -y
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade
Once all the packages have been successfully installed, you recommend rebooting your computer for the new package versions to be correctly updated. With the Kubuntu Backports PPA enabled on your Kubuntu or Ubuntu OS, you'll continue to automatically receive software updates for the KDE Plasma 5.12 LTS desktop environment as soon they become available upstream, so keep updating your PC.
