14 DAY TRIAL // Former NBA star Lamar Odom, who reached celebrity status after he married reality star Khloe Kardashian in 2009, is in a coma and on life support at a hospital in Las Vegas, after an accidental overdose.
Khloe is by his side, having flown there from LA, on a private jet, within hours of his hospitalization. In such cases, only family members are allowed in, and even though Khloe and Lamar signed the divorce papers, they’re still legally married.
Khloe is still Lamar’s wife
Khloe filed the divorce papers in December 2013, after almost 2 years of trying to get him to accept that he had a drug problem for which he needed rehab. The divorce dragged on for months afterwards: they had an iron-clad prenup, but Lamar refused to give Khloe the divorce or file his own documents.
From what he told the media, he still hoped he and Khloe would find a way to stay together. When he understood that was no longer a possibility, he signed off on the divorce.
TMZ says that, while both signed the papers, the divorce is yet to go through because “there is an extreme backlog in the family law courts” in Los Angeles, which means it will take another 2 months for it to become final.
In turn, this means that, as Lamar’s wife, Khloe gets to make all the decisions about the care he’s receiving right now in the hospital.
Reports say that Lamar is suffering from multiple-organ failure (including his kidneys and his heart), has had several strokes and may have suffered brain damage. His odds of making a full recovery are anything but good, with sources close to the Kardashians telling the media that they’ve already made peace with the fact that his battle has already been fought - and lost.
Prognosis is worsening
In another post, the same celebrity e-zine notes that Lamar’s prognosis is deteriorating with every minute that he continues in a coma.
There were reports that he squeezed Khloe’s hand when she spoke to him, but doctors believe that may have been an involuntary movement.
“Lamar Odom’s condition has deteriorated, and doctors are now telling the family the longer he remains in the condition he’s in the less likely it is that he will recover,” TMZ writes.
Prior to the hospitalization, Lamar had been partying at a Nevada brothel since last Friday, reportedly ingesting “every drug imaginable,” from cocaine to a Viagra herbal supplement. He was found unconscious in his VIP suite and hasn’t shown signs of waking up since.
