14 DAY TRIAL // Kubuntu maintainers have put a lot of work into the project and have managed to backport Plasma 5.3.2 and Frameworks 5.12.0 for the latest Kubuntu 15.04 version of the operating system.
One of the great things about Kubuntu is the fact that important features that land in the KDE project after the official launch of the distro are usually backported, which is an amazing achievement. This is not like setting up a PPA and pushing the latest packages. Most of the time, new dependencies need to be met, and a lot of testing has to be done before this kind of major improvements land in a supported Kubuntu operating system.
Some users might wonder why these updates don't land sooner, but developers and maintainers need to make sure that they don't break anything. A lot of users will choose to make the upgrade, and they mustn't end up with an non-functional system.
KDE Plasma 5.3.2 is the most advanced and stable version available
Even if KDE Plasma probably steals the show after an upgrade, maintainers have also upgraded the Frameworks component to version 5.12.0. These are the underpinnings of the KDE project, you it's quite important as well.
"Packages for the release of KDE's desktop suite Plasma 5.3.2 and KDE's Frameworks 5.12.0 are available for Kubuntu 15.04. You can get them from the Kubuntu Backports PPA. Bugs in the packaging should be reported to kubuntu-ppa on Launchpad. Bugs in the software to KDE," reads the announcement.
As usual, these updates arrive in Kubuntu via a PPA, which can be easily added and installed in the operating system with a few simple commands. Just open a terminal and enter the following (root will be needed):
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
