The KDE Project released the final version of the KDE Applications 19.08 open-source software suite for GNU/Linux distributions, a major release that adds many new features and dozens of improvements.

More than two months in the works, the KDE Applications 19.08 software suite is here to elevate your KDE apps experience by implementing various enhancements and new features. Among these, we can mention the ability to launch the Dolphin file manager from anywhere via a new Meta + E keyboard shortcut, along with improvements to the information panel to automatically play media files or copy the text displayed in the panel.

Furthermore, the KDE Applications 19.08 release improves various of KDE's default applications, including the Gwenview image viewer, which now features a much-improved, faster, and more resource-efficient thumbnailer when loading JPEG and RAW images, better support for Canon and Sony cameras, as well as a new "Share" menu that lets you send images to various places and more informative EXIF metadata for RAW files.

"This release is part of KDE's commitment to continually provide improved versions of the programs we ship to our users. New versions of Applications bring more features and better-designed software that increases the usability and stability of apps like Dolphin, Konsole, Kate, Okular, and all your other favorite KDE utilities. Our aim is to ensure you remain productive, and to make KDE software easier and more enjoyable for you to use," reads the release announcement.

Konsole, Okular, Kate, Kontact, Spectacle, and Kdenlive improvements

Various improvements were also introduced in the tiling feature of the Konsole terminal emulator, in Kate's "Quick Open" feature, which now sorts items by most recently used, the time-delay feature of the Spectacle screenshot utility, and to the annotations feature of the Okular document viewer, which now lets users expand and collapse all of them at once. Okular also now offers better support for EPub documents.

Last but not least, the Kontact groupware (email, calendar, contacts) suite received a Unicode color emoji selector and Markdown support in the email composer. The mobile integration was improved as well with the ability for KAddressBook to send SMS messages to contacts through KDE Connect. Also, the Kdenlive video editor now comes with a new set of keyboard-mouse combos for improved productivity.

The KDE Applications 19.08 software suite will soon be available for download from the stable software repositories of your favorite GNU/Linux distribution. We recommend all users to update their installations as soon as possible. KDE Applications 19.08 will be supported until November 2019 with three maintenance updates, the first one, KDE Applications 19.08.1, expected to be released on September 5th.
