This could be another botched update delivered by Microsoft

It’s not a secret that some of the updates that Microsoft rolls out every month as part of its Patch Tuesday cycle aren’t actually tested thoroughly and cause various problems on users’ computers, and that’s exactly the case of a fix that was shipped a few days ago to Windows 8 devices.

KB3069114 is a security patch developed specifically for Windows 8, but it turns out that a number of users are unable to install it because of unknown errors.

The install fails and the update is being re-offered after a reboot, users claim, and until now, the usual workaround that involves sfc /scannow and repeated system restarts hasn’t made any difference.

“Hi - I am using windows 8 and have tried repeatedly to get this latest update to install but no luck. I have run the Windows updater troubleshooter as administrator which said it fixed any issues but the file will not download and install, does anyone have any answers?” one user says on Microsoft’s Community forums.

Users on the Avast forums also reveal problems with this particular patch, again with no workaround available. Windows 8 x64-based systems seem to be the only ones affected at the moment.

Error code 80073712

Several of our readers have told us that, sometimes, installation of this update fails with error code 80073712, which is actually an old error message that first appeared when Microsoft rolled out Windows 8.1 Update.

Workarounds provided last year could help in this case too, so make sure you have a look at this guide to learn how to fix error code 80073712 on a Windows 8 computer.

We’ve also reached out to Microsoft to see if the company has acknowledged the problem and will update the article, should we receive an answer. In the meantime, if nothing works, you can hide the update to avoid being bothered every once in a while to install the patch.
