14 DAY TRIAL // The developers of the KaOS Linux open-source operating system released a new monthly snapshot, for the April 2018, which comes with a complete redesign to celebrate five years of activity.
KaOS it's five years old, and you might want to download the KaOS 2018.04 release as it comes with a brand new look and feel, including theme, icons, and login screen, an all-new welcome screen app called Croeso to make setting the system a breeze for newcomers, as well as the most recent KDE software and GNU/Linux technologies.
"It is five years ago this month that KaOS started, a nice way to commemorate is with releasing 2018.04. This ISO has a complete redesign of the Midna theme for 2018. Some 2500 new icons in use, rewritten SDDM login theme and a KaOS community selected new wallpaper (created by Jomada)," reads the announcement.
Here's what's new in KaOS 2018.04
Using the latest KDE Plasma 5.12.4 LTS desktop environment by default, along with the KDE Applications 18.04.0 and KDE Frameworks 5.45.0 software suites built against the Qt 5.10.1 application framework, the KaOS 2018.04 release brings the Mesa 17.3.9 graphics stack with experimental Nouveau patches.
These would allow the use of certain applications and web browsers based on QtWebengine when using the open-source Nouveau graphics driver on Nvidia GPU systems. This release also uses the next-generation Wayland 1.15.0 display server, the latest GStreamer 1.14.0 multimedia backend, and systemd 238 init system.
The default graphical installer is now based on Calamares 3.2, which brings numerous improvements and new features. Also included in KaOS 2018.04, there's NetworkManager 1.10.6, OpenJDK 8u161, OpenCV 3.4.1, Ruby 2.5.1, Rust 1.25.0, CFITSIO 3.44.0, Open MPI 3.0.1, , , Protobuf 3.5.2, and Intel-ucode 20180312.
As expected, the included Linux kernel comes with all the patches needed to allow users to do early microcode firmware updates and protect their systems against the Meltdown and Spectre security vulnerabilities, as well as other similar flaws.
