Since Caitlyn Jenner came out as trans-woman in April, in the Diane Sawyer special, she’s been particularly praising of rapper Kanye West, married to Caitlyn’s step-daughter Kim Kardashian. Apparently, Kanye played a major part in helping Kim come to terms with the reality that Bruce Jenner, her step-dad, was now Caitlyn, her step-dad.

Consequently, it was to be expected to have Kanye on Caitlyn’s new docuseries, I Am Cait, which premiered on E! over the weekend. He was one of the many people who came to Caitlyn’s Malibu home to meet her.

You can see a video of their first interaction below. Things got off rather awkwardly, with a Kanye smile and an awkward Kanye side-hug, but it wasn’t long before he was praising Caitlyn for having the courage to come out and be true to herself.

He did it, obviously, in typical Yeezus fashion.

He described the transition as “one of the strongest things that have happened in our existence as human beings that are controlled by perception,” and continued by saying that Jenner “couldn’t have been up against more,” in the sense that she had a lot to lose by coming out.

To her credit, during the same premiere episode, Caitlyn actually took the trouble to state her privilege by saying that, unlike many other trans-people, she had it easy. She was rich, she could afford the transition surgery and everything else that it entailed (including the feminization procedure of earlier this year), she had an amazing support system and she could, if she chose, not face the outside world or any kind of criticism coming from it.
