This problem was acknowledged by Microsoft on June 11

At least one of the most recent cumulative updates for Windows 10 cause some PCs to boot to a black screen, as reported by a number of users.

While at this point which update is pushing devices to this black screen, some readers told me that the problem is experienced after installing the Windows 10 version 1809 (October 2018 Update) cumulative update KB4507469.

Several users on reddit also confirmed that this problem is encountered on a fully up-to-date device running the most recent cumulative updates for Windows 10.

Microsoft acknowledged a similar bug in June when it discovered that cumulative update KB4503327 pushed devices to a black screen on the first boot after installing the patch.

“We are investigating reports that a small number of devices may startup to a black screen during the first logon after installing updates,” Microsoft said at that time, explaining that the issue existed on Windows 10 version 1809, Windows 10 version 1803, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019, and Windows Server 2019.

Fix still in the works

The software giant is yet to release a fix and it says in the known issues section of cumulative update KB4507469 that it’s still working on a patch. Meanwhile, a workaround does exist, as users can press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to initiate a force reboot, as the device should then start correctly.

“To mitigate this issue, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, then select the Power button in the lower right corner of the screen and select Restart. Your device should now restart normally,” Microsoft says.

No ETA is available as to when the fix could be released, but Microsoft says it is “working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.”

There’s no need to start a system restore, as some users have suggested, but to use the workaround mentioned above to boot to the desktop.
