Josh Brolin may have thrown some major shade at Ryan Gosling in a new interview, over his fake Robert De Niro accent

Josh Brolin isn’t the kind of guy that minces words, even if he knows he runs the risk of getting on the wrong side of a very large and very vocal online community: the Ryan Gosling fanbase. In a new interview cited by Entertainment Tonight, the actor talks about working with his younger peers and throws some serious shade at one of them in particular.

The Internet has decided that the target for Brolin’s diss can only be Ryan Gosling, with whom he worked on “Gangster Squad.”

A bad accent, stupid attitude

For the sake of clarity, we should note that, in one of his older interviews, Gosling admitted that he never spoke in his natural accent, having long adopted a Marlon Brando one. He was aware of how ridiculous his admission sounded, but added that his phony accent had become natural to him in time, so basically it wasn’t phony anymore.

Josh Brolin would have 2 things to add to that: number 1, the accent is not Marlon Brando but Robert De Niro, and number 2, it’s still a very stupid thing and he’s not getting any points with his peers for doing it.

Of course, we’re working under the assumption that Brolin is really throwing shade at Gosling here, and not at some other “punk” he worked with.

“I see young Hollywood punks on the set, and it’s funny to me. Because it’s absolutely me all over again. I’m the old guy who’s like, ‘Oh cool, you got your leather jacket and it cost you $400 [€355] and you bought it all ripped up!’,” he says. “I remember a guy I worked with who was from Ontario, but he talked like De Niro. I was like, ‘Holy [expletive], he’s actually doing De Niro.’ Does he know that I know? I’m not even listening to what he’s saying. It’s fascinating to me.”

In case you were wondering, yes, Ryan Gosling is from Ontario. This totally narrows down the list of possibilities, you will agree.

Gosling and the Marlon Brando accent

Ryan Gosling is famous for a lot of things, from his good looks to his acting talent and dedication, his sense of fashion, the “Hey Girl” meme and his homebody reported skills, and his fake accent.

In 2010, as noted above, he revealed that he had developed a Marlon Brando accent when he was still a kid, thinking that a Canadian accent was simply “not tough enough.” It would later become natural to him, so now he wouldn’t be able to shake it even if he wanted to.

The video below, from NY Mag’s Vulture, takes a closer look at some of Ryan’s most high-profile roles and how his accent evolved. It’s called the “Ryan Gosling Accent-o-Meter” and it goes just perfectly with this story of Josh Brolin allegedly shading him for his fake accent. So enjoy!
