Johnny Depp plays infamous Boston mobster Whitey Bulger in the movie “Black Mass,” and the role is already getting him some Oscar buzz. Naturally, that means having to answer the question of how he’d feel if he won during the promotional tour.

As it turns out, Depp wouldn’t be too thrilled to hear his name called out on the film industry’s biggest night in early 2016. He’d settle instead for just a nomination, he says in a new interview with BBC.

It’s not that he wouldn’t consider the Oscar a huge honor, but rather that he’d choose to not have to get up on that stage to address such a huge crowd, including the one watching him online. Being nominated would be enough of a reward for him.

After all, he says, he’s not doing what he’s doing for the awards.

“The idea of winning means that you’re in competition with someone and I’m not in competition with anybody,” the actor explains. “I just stick to my guns and do what I want to do. Sometimes people don’t like it but that’s alright.”

This isn’t the first time that Depp says he would be the opposite of thrilled if he won an Oscar, but I guess we’ll never know how honest he is about it until he actually wins one. For the 2016 race, while he is in it, he’s not a favorite, so it might be another while before that happens.
