Johnny Depp has been a sex symbol since the ‘80s, when he became a teen idol with “21 Jump Street.” For years, he was the best example of how the boho chic styling could do wonders to a man, especially if that man also seemed to possess an almost unnatural ability to not age.

Until not long ago, one of Hollywood’s urban legends claimed that Depp was a vampire, though not in the literal sense. Unlike many other celebrities, he seemed able to hold on to his youthful looks without the (apparent) need to turn to plastic surgery, which made him the enviable possessor of the fabled fountain of youth.

Not so anymore, as it became very clear with his most recent appearances this month, at the Venice Film Festival and TIFF 2015, where he’s promoting the mobster drama “Black Mass.” And the Internet is pretty heartbroken about it.

Johnny Depp is losing his good looks, getting too “fat”

These are just two of the negative things you’re bound to stumble across online when reading up on the actor. In addition to getting glowing critical reviews for his performance in “Black Mass,” a movie in which he’s almost unrecognizable under lots of makeup and prosthetics, he’s also getting attention for his recent red carpet appearances.

The latter isn’t of the favorable kind, though.

Summing up the things celebrity bloggers, celebrity media outlets or even the casual observers are saying on social media, Johnny Depp has “lost it.” He appears heavier and considerably bloated, with greasy and badly dyed hair, and a general air about him that makes you seriously question his hygiene.

The very quirks that made him a style icon - the scarves, the necklaces, the rings, the tooth metal inserts, and even the guyliner - are now considered distractions from the fact that he simply doesn’t look good. They no longer make him look edgy or cool, they simply make him appear as a desperate middle-aged man who knows time is catching up to him but he’s determined to still look edgy and cool.

Perhaps the worst thing about it is that, in his attempt to mask the slight weight gain, Depp is opting for heavy 3-piece suits that are very poorly tailored. Instead of masking the added weight, they actually make him appear heavier than he is.

Male star gets bullied, no one bats an eyelash

Page Six and the Daily Mail are just 2 of the bigger media outlets running stories on how Depp is no longer the handsome guy girls used to go crazy for. “Depp, 52, who will next appear in ‘Black Mass,’ is evidently taking the ‘Mass’ part of the title literally,” the former publication writes in a recent column.

Indeed, Depp has aged and he has also gained some weight. But if articles as mean as these 2 mentioned above were written about a female star, the blogosphere would be up in arms instead of nodding in agreement, as it is now - not to mention refrain from cracking jokes on the topic.

Just like it happened to Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Gerard Butler or Josh Brolin, Depp is now being bullied for something he really can’t control: aging.

When Renee Zellweger was publicly ridiculed last year for getting a “new face” that made her look like a completely new person, both celebrities and the media came to her defense. Depp - or any other male star in general - doesn’t get this kind of support.
