Jake Gyllenhaal may not like to talk about his physical transformation for “Southpaw” in terms of how hard he had to train and how many times a week he trained, but he can’t help it if The Weinstein Company wants this to be a focus point in the film’s marketing campaign.

Case in point: shortly after the actor told Details magazine that he didn’t like it when the media paid so much attention to the physical transformation he underwent for the role, the studio has released a new featurette that talks precisely of that.

All debates aside, Gyllenhaal’s transformation is impressive, as was his commitment for the role. To play a boxing champ, he trained for every day of the week, in 2 sessions, together with director Antoine Fuqua.

He trained like a boxer for up to 6 hours a day and, sometime, the punches he took in front of the camera were real so that the story would be more convincing. For several months before the movie went into production, Gyllenhaal lived and trained like a boxer and no longer had any kind of personal life.

You can see his transformation in the video below. “Southpaw” will be out this month, with an OST by rapper Eminem, who is also credited as producer. Fuqua initially wanted Eminem for Gyllenhaal’s part, but that didn’t work out.
