Microsoft will end the free upgrade promo on July 29

If you’re planning to move to Windows 10, you'd better hurry up because the free upgrade offer ends in just 10 days, and every user who wants to make the switch after this deadline will have to pay the full price of the license.

Windows 10 was launched on July 29, and in order to boost its adoption, Microsoft has made a surprising offer: users of Windows 7 and 8.1 were and still are for the next 10 days allowed to upgrade to the new operating system without paying a single cent.

The upgrade is handled by the Get Windows 10 app, a tool that has caused criticism against the company, as many users accused Redmond of becoming too pushy with the new operating system.

Windows 10 missing 1 billion devices target

Right now, Windows 10 is running on nearly 20 percent of the desktop PCs in the world, and Windows 7, the number one PC platform, has dropped to around 40 percent as many users have taken advantage of the offer and performed the upgrade.

But on the other hand, Microsoft itself has admitted that it’s very likely to miss its ambitious goal of bringing Windows 10 on 1 billion devices by FY2018. In a recent statement, the company explains that sales of the phone unit have been rather low, so smartphones have dragged down Windows 10 adoption.

“Windows 10 is off to the hottest start in history with over 350 million monthly active devices, with record customer satisfaction and engagement. We're pleased with our progress to date, but due to the focusing of our phone hardware business, it will take longer than FY18 for us to reach our goal of 1 billion monthly active devices. In the year ahead, we are excited about usage growth coming from commercial deployments and new devices - and increasing customer delight with Windows,” Yusuf Mehdi, chief of the Windows marketing unit, has said.

In the meantime, however, you still have 10 days to perform the upgrade. And if you still can’t find a compelling reason to do it, just think that it’s free software, and once you install it, it remains free for the entire lifetime of your device. So you don’t even have to use it, just upgrade to Windows 10 and then go back to whatever version you use. This way, you can make sure that should you want to install Windows 10 sometime in the future, it’ll still be free.

And ignore the Windows 10 criticism because it’s always better to give it a shot yourself and then decide if it’s worth using or not. Haters gonna hate, potatoes gonna potate.
