Amazon will be pulled from the store on August 15

Users of Windows phones have lost several important applications in the latest few weeks, and it’s now finally official that another top developer is pulling its app from the store.

Amazon has confirmed after weeks of uncertainty that it’s discontinuing its Windows Phone app, but the company hasn’t provided a reason to explain its decision. Amazon is now emailing users who previously installed the Windows Phone app to tell them about the change, but also to point them to the official website, which is supposed to let them continue shopping even without a dedicated application.

But given the loyal Windows Phone userbase, it’s hard to believe that many of those who previously used Amazon would turn to the website to shop online unless they really have to.

“Our records indicate that you have previously installed the Amazon App for Windows Phone from the Microsoft App Store. We will be retiring the app you currently have on your device, meaning its contents will no longer be updated. You will still have access to the app until 15 August, 2016. We encourage you to visit Amazon.co.uk on your mobile browser where you will have access to our newest shopping features and customer experience,” the email sent to users reads.

Little hope for a Windows 10 app

Amazon will indeed pull its app on August 15 from the Windows Phone store, and although some people think that the company would instead develop a universal app for Windows 10, it’s hard to believe this can happen, despite the fact that Amazon was a supporter of Windows 8 from the very beginning.

On the other hand, those using a Windows 10 PC can install the Amazon Assistant extension if they want to shop on Amazon and stay up to date with everything happening with their purchases, so there’s only little hope that a universal app could ever be released.

For the moment, however, things aren’t going very well for Windows Phone, with Microsoft itself revealing declining revenue in the most recent financial report released by the company.
