Concept imagines a new role for the iPhone X notch

The iPhone X notch has been without a doubt one of the most controversial features that Apple introduced on the latest iPhone generations, with people mixed on whether this is the right approach or not.

While at this point the iPhone X plays a key role in terms of hardware, because it’s the home of the front-facing parts like the Face ID cameras, it barely does anything as far as software goes.

And that doesn’t have to be the case, as this concept from Zeta suggests, as the iOS applications can be developed in such a way that they can get tighter integration with the notch.

Basically, iOS apps can use the notch for UI effects, as it’s the case of the cards generating effect that you can see in the GIF below. In short, pulling to refresh has been re-imagined to use the notch as the place where the card comes out from, giving a nice and modern feeling to an otherwise highly criticized design choice.

Notch coming to all iPhones this year

Obviously, this is just an idea for the time being, but it’s something that developers should have in mind when designing new apps, as it’s pretty clear that the notch doesn’t necessarily have to be there only to eat up valuable screen space. There are many ways to integrate it into the apps’ UI and it all appears to come down to how creative every developer proves to be.

For what it’s worth, every iPhone launching in 2018 could come with a notch, as Apple is believed to be working on bringing the facial recognition system to the entire lineup of devices. This means that developers who optimize their apps for the notch, not necessarily with these effects, but with support for it, will be ready for the revamped iPhone series launching this year.

It remains to be seen how long it’ll take for the notch to benefit from such integration in iOS apps, but in the meantime, applauds to Zeta for this brilliant idea.
