Research shows Apple’s new model topped sales in February

It’s believed the iPhone X is selling well below expectations, with evidence from the supply chain apparently confirming this theory, as Apple itself has reportedly reduced orders for new parts.

But according to new data from Counterpoint Research, iPhone X was simply the best-selling smartphone worldwide in February ahead not only of all other iPhone models but also of Samsung’s flagships.

The even better news for Apple is that four of the five top-selling devices in the second month of the year were iPhones, and CR says the company managed to improve volumes by as much as 5 percent versus February 2017. “However, its market share slipped lower as the new downward curve of its product cycle continues,” CR notes.

iPhone X topped sales with 5.1%, followed by iPhone 8 with 3.1% and iPhone 7 with 2.2%. The iPhone 7 sold particularly well thanks to discounts after the launch of the 2017 generation. The bigger iPhone 8 Plus is fourth with 1.9%, while Xiaomi’s Redmi 5A managed to get the same share.

Samsung, top OEM worldwide

Samsung, on the other hand, is only sixth with the Galaxy S8 and 1.45%, but it’s worth knowing that in February, the Galaxy S9 wasn’t yet available. CR says Samsung also improved its share, and even better results are likely to be observed when the S9 is part of the data.

“Another tech giant Samsung, also grew volumes by ~3% annually due to the good performance of the Galaxy S8, after price cuts ahead of the Galaxy S9 launch, along with the good performance of J7 series. Samsung maintained its No. 1 position in the Handset and Smartphone sales globally,” the research reads.

Somewhat surprising is that smaller iPhone still sells better than their larger siblings, despite the bigger difference that Apple makes between these devices in terms of specs. The iPhone 8 Plus, for instance, comes with a dual camera system and a bigger battery, but judging from these numbers, the smaller model is still the more appealing one for customers.
