The transition from Lightning to another port, such as USB-C, or to no port at all is something that has been overly discussed, but as it turns out, Apple is perfectly fine with the current setup on the iPhone.

So while so many people suggested on several occasions that going for Type-C is something that Apple itself has been considering, the Cupertino-based tech giant instead preferred to just stick with the Lightning port that everybody has already gotten used to.

But this doesn’t necessarily mean Apple isn’t planning big changes in the long term.

It is, and according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company wants to reduce the number of chargers it offers for its products from 5 to 3. And to do this, Apple is even considering finally giving up on Lightning and embracing USB-C, the universal port that’s already so common in the Android ecosystem.

An iPhone without any ports?

While it’s pretty clear that a USB-C iPhone is still uncertain right now, sources with knowledge of the matter said on several occasions that Apple was also working on a portless iPhone.

In other words, Apple indeed planned to give up on the Lightning port, but instead of going for USB-C, the company would go for no port at all.

The charging and data transfers would take place wirelessly, though it goes without saying such an approach would be a lot more convenient for other things requiring a cable, such as CarPlay, for example.

Apple, however, sees the migration to a portless iPhone as a massive step forward in terms of security, as it could prevent hacking boxes from breaking into its device.

No decision has been made just yet though, so while Apple is still pondering several alternatives to the Lightning port, its proprietary connector is still alive and kicking.
