The iPhone XR-based model isn’t yet set in stone

It’s no longer a secret that Apple is already working on a new-generation iPhone SE, but so far, the company has remained completely tight-lipped on everything related to this device.

The most recent reports on the iPhone SE 4 suggested the device could be based on the iPhone XR, and without a doubt, this makes a lot of sense.

On the other hand, such an approach suggests the device would be substantially bigger, with Apple to pretty much kill off the smaller iPhones once and for all.

But according to display expert Ross Young (via 9to5mac), the strategy that Apple wants to use for the next-generation iPhone SE is not yet set in stone. In other words, the Cupertino-based tech giant hasn’t yet decided whether it wants the next iPhone SE to be based on the iPhone XR or not.

And what’s more, the company is yet to decide the final size of the display, as right now, the iPhone maker is evaluating several options, including screens between 5.7 and 6.1 inches. There are two suppliers currently on the table for the iPhone SE 4, and one thing seems to be certain right now: the device will almost certainly use an LCD panel, even if Apple is also considering OLED screens.

Going for OLED would obviously make the iPhone SE more expensive, and without a doubt, Apple doesn’t want to go that route. The iPhone SE needs to remain a more affordable alternative to the more premium siblings, and this is the reason why sticking with a smaller LCD makes sense at the end of the day.

The next-generation iPhone SE is expected to go live at some point in 2024, so if you were waiting for the device to be unveiled in the spring of the next year, this is not going to happen, according to the analyst.
