Apple is expected to unveil the second-generation iPhone SE in the first months of 2020, and more and more analysts seem to believe that this smaller and more affordable model is going to be a winner.

More recently, top Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said iPhone SE 2 will be one of the main catalysts of Apple’s growth in the first quarter of 2020, together with the growing demand for iPhone 11.

In a note to investors, Kuo says that new iPhone sales are likely to reach 70 to 75 million units this year, which means Apple would ship fewer new iPhones as compared to the same time last year. iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max will account for some 40 million units of all sales.

Strong iPhone 11 sales

The analyst says this dropping figure is mostly the result of supply struggles, especially in the case of premium models – last year, Apple sold 43 million iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max units, and the delay in shipments, in turn caused by the constrained inventory, is the main reason for the difference.

iPhone 11 will continue to be a model selling like hotcakes, and the analyst expects this particular configuration to sell in high numbers reaching 40 million units. This is up from 25 million units for the iPhone XR, the model that iPhone 11 actually replaces, and the lower price is believed to be a key factor driving the sales increase.

iPhone XR was available from $749 in the United States, whereas iPhone 11 starts at $699.

iPhone SE 2 is expected to hit the shelves at approximately $399, and again, this lower price point is likely to be the main catalyst of a strong sales throughout the year. The new-generation iPhone SE could use the body of the iPhone 8 with under-the-hood upgrades like Apple’s A13 chip and 3GB RAM. Touch ID will probably be retained and Face ID won’t be available.
