Production has already started, leakster claims

The next iPhone expected to see daylight isn’t the iPhone X successor, but the second-generation iPhone SE, with several sources indicating that it could launch as soon as May or June at WWDC.

Now new information provided by leakster Benjamin Geskin on Twitter reveals that mass production of the iPhone SE 2 has already started, and the device is likely to come with some worthy upgrades, including wireless charging.

The new-generation iPhone SE is reportedly called Jaguar and it is expected to make the transition from a metal body to a glass case, which in turn would allow for wireless charging.

This is a feature that Apple first debuted on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (and also available on the iPhone X), as the glass body enables wireless charging. Previously, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus used aluminum cases instead of glass.

No Face ID and headphone jack

While a glass case indeed makes devices look more exquisite, it also makes them more slippery and prone to physical damage, despite manufacturers’ investments into making this new material as durable as possible.

On the other hand, iPhone SE 2 is likely to come with a similar design as the previous generation, so it won’t adopt the edge-to-edge approach like the iPhone X. It won’t feature Face ID and a notch, though a home button would still be offered, with recent speculation claiming that Apple could also give up on the headphone jack. Previously, Cupertino ditched the audio connector on the iPhone 7.

There’s still a lot to discover on the iPhone SE 2 front, but with the launch just around the corner, more information is likely to make the rounds soon. What we know for sure, however, is that Apple isn’t yet willing to give up on the 4-inch phone segment and launching a new SE model is the best way to bring customers to latest-generation hardware without forcing them to make a compromise in terms of physical dimensions.
