Report claims Apple seeks new suppliers for charging tech

iPhone 8 and iPhone X already come with some sort of fast charging, but as many people found out the hard way, it’s not exactly the kind of fast charging that you typically find on high-end Android phones.

And yet, this is where Apple is aiming to go with the new-generation iPhone launching this year, as the company wants to finally provide its customers with truly fast fast-charging.

According to an investor note issued by Rosenblatt Securities analyst Jun Zhang and obtained by AI, the Cupertino-based tech giant is currently exploring its options to make this possible on the new models arriving in September.

And as it turns out, these options include working with other suppliers building fast charging modules to match the performance of Android phones.

Specifically, what Apple plans to do is replace the existing 5-volt 2-amp modules with 9-volt, 2-amp and 5-volt, 3-amp circuitry for this upcoming generation. Power Integrations could thus become the exclusive supplier of fast-charging tech for the iPhone, as Apple could give up on its contracts with ON Semiconductor and NXP Semiconductors.

Wireless charging on cheaper iPhone

This isn’t the only charging feature that Apple is said to be considering, as the more affordable model with a 6.1-inch LCD panel is also likely to benefit from this strategy. The cheaper iPhone could come with wireless charging built by Texas Instruments, as Apple could be able to obtain a better price than from Broadcom, which manufactured the modules used on the existing models.

While this could help Apple cut the price of the iPhone, it’s also a possible confirmation that this model would actually feature wireless charging. Previously, it was rumored that Apple might be giving up on some key features in order to make this device more affordable, including the glass body, which in turn allows for wireless charging.

But as with everything Apple, these are just rumors for the time being, and more information will probably emerge in the coming months as we approach the expected September launch date.
