Android and iOS are currently the world’s two dominant mobile operating systems, and statistics provided by Kantar for the three-month period ending March 2018 show that their sales share has gone up and down in several large markets across the world.

Specifically, Android dropped 1.9% in Germany to 75.8%, while iOS improved 4.4% to 22.9%, with the two platforms having a completely opposite performance in the UK. In this country, Android went up 5.6% to 62.7%, while iOS declined 4.2% to 37%.

Similar figures were recorded in Spain as well, as Apple improved 5.5% to 13.6%, while Android lost 5.3% to 86.1%. Overall, in the EU5 region Android posted a growth of 1 percentage point to 77%, while iOS improved 0.9% to 22.1%.

Apple’s performance in the United States was flat versus the three-month period ending March 2017, sticking with a sales share of 39 percent, while Android improved 0.1% to reach 59.1%.

iPhone X wins China

Kantar says in the United States Google is the big winner, while Apple and Samsung recorded only small gains versus the previous year.

“In the USA, Apple and Samsung have managed to eke out year-on-year share gains, up 0.1% and 1.4% respectively. Google has achieved its highest ever quarterly sales share of 3.4%, up from 1.7% a year earlier, thanks to the success of its Pixel line. ZTE, also under pressure from the US government, saw its sales share fall to 2.5% in the latest quarter,” Kantar says.

On the other hand, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus sold better than iPhone X, according to these numbers, but the anniversary model is selling like hot cakes in China where it increased 22.1% to become the best-selling smartphone in the country.

Samsung, Apple, and Huawei continue to be the top three brands in Europe, accounting for 71% of the sales in the quarter, while Xiaomi comes fourth with 4.4% alone.
