Report claims iPhone 8 could start at $1,200; the best Windows phone, the HP Elite X3, is currently available for $599

The iPhone 8 will be an expensive piece of technology, and earlier reports have indicated that even the base model could cost more than $1,000.

And now information provided by Apple watcher John Gruber provides us with a closer look at how much the iPhone 8 could cost later this year when it hits the market, with the most affordable version to actually have a price tag of at least $1,200.

And that’s the more optimistic figure, as Gruber said the iPhone 8 with 64GB storage could also be priced at $1,249, depending on stock at the time of launch. Apple is believed to be facing production issues due to reduced OLED supply, and the company could unveil the iPhone 8 with limited stock.

Windows phones, the more affordable option

This could make the more expensive iPhone 8 with 256 GB cost no less than $1,400, Gruber says, though he explains that this will only be the starting price and depending on features and colors it could cost even more. This would translate to an even bigger price in Europe and other markets where special taxes apply.

If this is indeed the case, then the iPhone 8 will cost 2 times more than the best Windows phone around at this point, the HP Elite X3. With hardware activity almost non-existent in the Windows phone ecosystem, the chances are that the Elite X3 would remain the top device for a long time, including in the fall when Apple takes the wraps off the iPhone 8.

Right now, the HP Elite X3 bundle can be yours from the Microsoft Store for $599, and the package includes the HP Elite X3 desk dock that allows the phone to double as a PC when connected to a bigger screen.

The iPhone 8 is expected to be unveiled in September, though sales should only start in October or November due to the production struggle we mentioned above.
