Report claims Apple planning RAM increase on iPhones

Apple’s next-generation iPhone is expected to launch in the fall of this year, and needless to say, the company is planning some big upgrades on this device.

One of the highlights is the transition from Lightning to USB-C. The European Commission has passed new regulations that require companies selling products on the continent to equip their devices with a universal USB-C port.

This should help reduce electronic waste, the EU says, and also make charging more devices more convenient for users.

Apple doesn’t want to wait until the very last minute to embrace USB-C, so the company is expected to adopt the new port as soon as this year.

According to TrendForce, another big upgrade is the addition of more RAM. The analyst firm previously said the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max would come with 8GB RAM, whereas the standard models, namely the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus would stick with 6GB of RAM.

In a report forecasting the trends in the DRAM market, TrendForce notes that Apple’s upcoming upgrades would help the industry.

“Apple will bump up the capacity and specifications of the DRAM solutions featured in the next generation of the iPhone that is scheduled for release this year. Taking these latest factors into consideration, TrendForce estimates that the YoY growth rate of the average DRAM content of smartphones will reach around 6.7% for 2023. This projection is a significant improvement compared with the YoY growth rate of 3.9% for 2022. However, TrendForce also forecasts that the YoY growth rate will stay under 10% in the next several years,” the company says.

Apple has obviously remained tight-lipped on its iPhone 15 plans, so a healthy pinch of salt is still recommended at this point.
