And the notch is getting the ax on some models

It’s still pretty difficult to get an iPhone 13 today due to the very constrained inventory, which in turn is the result of the component shortage, but everybody already seems to be talking about the next-generation iPhone coming in the fall of 2022.

And it all happens for a very good reason, as the iPhone 14 is projected to introduce a series of major changes, including the demise of the notch.

That’s right, Apple is preparing to ditch the notch, and the alternative approach the company seems to be favoring right now is a punch-hole display similar to the one currently used on Samsung’s high-end models.

Needless to say, Apple hasn’t said a single thing about this new plan, but several people familiar with the matter have already confirmed the iPhone 14 will almost certainly give up on the notch, at least for two of the four models seeing the daylight in 2022.

A new report from The Elec indicates that LG will be one of the companies that will provide Apple with OLED panels featuring the punch-hole design. Interestingly, LG has until now only supplied LCD panels to the Cupertino-based tech giant, so the switch not only to OLED but also to punch-hole screens is notable for the South Korean company.

The punch-hole displays

Apple will launch four different iPhone models in the fall, namely the 6.1-inch iPhone 14, the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, and the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The standard models (the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Max) will continue to sport a notch, while the Pro and the Pro Max will give up on this feature for a punch-hole screen.

In the long term, there’s a good chance Apple kills the notch on all models, though this is something that will remain to be seen as the redesign of the iPhone gains more pace.
