Only the Pro models will get the new A16 chip

Apple’s next-generation iPhone is projected to go live in September, and while the company has so far remained completely tight-lipped on everything regarding this new device, people familiar with the matter indicated that some pretty big changes are coming to the lineup.

More specifically, Apple will launch two standard iPhones, namely the iPhone 14 and the all-new iPhone 14 Max, and two Pro models.

Apple is trying to make a bigger difference between the standard and the Pro devices, and this is why the company is killing off the notch on the latter in the favor of a punch-hole screen.

As a result, only the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Max will come with a notch, and according to a recent report from iDropNews, the standard iPhones will also sport the same chip as before.

The new long-term strategy

In other words, while the Pros will come with a new A16 chip, the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Max will be powered by the A15. But the report claims the company wouldn’t publicly advertise this change, as the full lineup will still be said to run on the A16 chip.

Most likely, the chip installed on the standard iPhone 14 models will sport a series of improvements and updates for the A15, but this still wouldn’t make it as powerful as the new A16.

The new approach aligns with the changes Apple is planning for the Apple Watch as well. People familiar with the matter said the new Apple Watch Series 8 would sport the same chip as before, most likely with a series of optimizations and additional refinements.

In the long term, this could be an approach that makes more sense, as only the Pro models would come with new chips, whereas the standard devices will stick with a previous-generation version. Of course, all details will be revealed later this year when Apple announces the new iPhones.
