The Pro and the Pro Max will use a hole-punch display

Apple is gearing up for some pretty big changes on the next-generation iPhone, and according to a new report, the company is very likely to kill off the controversial notch.

At least on some models, that is, as The Elec reveals that Apple plans to give up on the notch and go for a punch-hole display on the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Using a punch-hole display wouldn’t be an industry-first, as Android devices have been relying on this approach for several years already. For the Cupertino-based tech giant, however, the change is significant, as the notch has until now served as the home of its facial recognition system called Face ID.

So by giving up on the notch, which was introduced on the iPhone X back in 2017, Apple has to embed the Face ID module into the screen, which is expected to be quite a challenge for screen manufacturers too.

The iPhone 14 lineup

Apple’s 2022 iPhone lineup will include four different models, with some pretty big changes overall.

The “standard” iPhones will be the iPhone 14 and the all-new iPhone 14 Max, with Apple to therefore give up on the mini form factor. These two devices will sport 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively, and as compared to the Pro models, they will still feature a notch.

The Pro models will stick with their existing sizes, so they will come with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, this time without a notch, if today’s report is accurate.

Of course, Apple hasn’t provided any information in this regard, so you’d better take everything with a healthy pinch of salt for now. The new iPhones are expected to launch, as usual, in September next year, with more information on them to surface throughout the year.
