Apple is projected to launch a new iPhone generation in the fall, but by the looks of things, bigger changes are likely to go live in 2022, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

And it’s all because the Cupertino-based tech giant is planning some substantial refinements, including giving up on the controversial notch.

As most people remember, the notch was officially introduced on the iPhone X back in 2017, and at that point, it was received with mixed feelings by people out there. Apple rivals, including Samsung, have even used this idea to mock the company, though eventually, they ended up bringing a notch to their devices as well.

Since the debut of the iPhone XS, Apple has been continuously rumored to be working on a smaller notch, and the upcoming iPhone 13 is once again expected to come with this design improvement.

The future of Face ID

But Kuo says a bigger change would happen in 2022 when Apple is likely to completely give up on the notch and replace it with a punch-hole camera similar to the one on the Samsung Galaxy S21.

Without a doubt, this is an approach that perfectly makes sense given the purpose is to increase the available screen estate, but the more important question is what Apple plans to do with Face ID.

The Face ID components are integrated into the notch, so if the company goes for a punch-hole camera, it needs to find a new way to continue offering facial recognition, as embedded all components into the glass is believed to be a rather complex and too expensive approach.

Of course, there’s also the chance Apple gives up on Face ID entirely, but this is highly unlikely to happen given all the effort the company has put into this effort, so time will tell how the Cupertino-based firm would eventually deal with the whole thing if a punch-hole camera is indeed planned.
