Apple reportedly considering in-screen fingerprint reader

Apple’s next-generation iPhone is projected to get the go-ahead in September, and people familiar with the matter don’t expect any big changes, but rather small upgrades to the lineup that went live last fall.

In other words, Apple is expected to launch four different iPhones this year, all with under-the-hood improvements for the current models. As a result, this new lineup would be less of an iPhone 13 and more of an S upgrade, and this makes some refer to the upcoming series as iPhone 12S.

A report from Bloomberg explains that while Apple is only looking into hardware upgrades for the next iPhone, one idea the company is exploring is bringing back Touch ID.

Removed in 2017 when Apple officially introduced Face ID and thus replaced fingerprint sensors with facial recognition, Touch ID could therefore return this year, only that the company wants to use a modern approach and embed it into the screen.

Touch ID + Face ID

Of course, the idea isn’t new, as several Android devices already come with fingerprint sensors embedded into the glass. Apple would thus be late to the party once again, though we should all expect the company to introduce it as one big innovation.

In the meantime, it goes without saying this is just a rumor for the time being, and the Bloomberg report itself indicates the whole thing is still in testing, with no final decision made just yet.

If Touch ID does make its return to the iPhone lineup, it’s likely to be offered alongside Face ID, as Apple doesn’t intend to kill off its facial recognition system just yet. In other words, the iPhone would feature a Touch ID + Face ID combo, once again an approach currently being used by some Android devices out there too.

Needless to say, everything is still in the rumor stage, so you’d better take everything with a pinch of salt for now.
