While Apple no longer shares any data about the sales of its smartphone, statistics published by Counterpoint Research show that iPhone 12 is already the world’s number one 5G smartphone.

iPhone 12 accounted for 16 percent of smartphone sales in October 2020, according to their data, followed by iPhone 12 Pro with 8 percent.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G reached the podium with 4 percent, followed by two Huawei models, both with 3 percent, namely the Note 7 5G and P40 5G.

“The iPhone 12 also entered the top 10 bestseller list of 5G devices for January-October 2020, attaining the seventh position. This is a big achievement, considering the new iPhone series was available for only two weeks in October. Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G, which was the best-selling 5G device in September, slipped to the third position,” Counterpoint explains.

The iPhone 12 growth

So what’s making the iPhone 12 such a strong seller?

According to Counterpoint, not only that the demand for 5G smartphones increased, but carriers also offered several campaigns that helped improved sales of this new market.

“There is a large pent-up demand for 5G upgrade, especially within the iOS base, which is now getting converted into sales. This was complemented by strong carrier promos, especially in the US, which accounted for over one-third of the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro sales for the month. All carriers were offering the iPhone 12 for $0 through a mix of the trade-in and unlimited plans,” the company explains.

Apple launched four different iPhone models this year, and all feature 5G connectivity. The smallest is the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 mini, while the iPhone 11 successor is now called iPhone 12 and comes with a 6.1-inch display. The Pro model has been upgraded to 6.1 inches as well, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max is now the top-of-the-range model in the new lineup.
