Phone app broken down after update to latest iOS version

iOS 12 seemed to be a much smoother update than iOS 11 at first, but as it turns out, the experience isn’t as flawless as expected for everyone.

Posts making the rounds lately indicate that a growing number of iPhone users experience issues with the Phone app which freezes, hangs, or crashes all of a sudden.

This technically makes it impossible to use the iPhone as a phone, with the typical workarounds like resetting reportedly not making any difference. Judging from posts online, including Apple’s Communities forums, the issue isn’t limited just to one iPhone, but to several models, including iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 7. Older versions like iPhone 6 are also said to be impacted.

No workaround

Some users claim they have reached out to Apple who suggested a full reset, though as said, this doesn’t always repair the issue for everyone. Aside from the Phone app problem, everything is said to be working correctly on the affected devices.

“I reached out to Apple, and they say that they have received additional reports of this issue, but there is no current workaround other than rebooting. They suggested resetting all settings, but that seems to be more of a "stab in the dark" method of troubleshooting rather than an actual workaround or solution,” one user explains.

The update to iOS 12.0.1 also doesn’t fix the issue, and some users suggest that resetting network settings may do the trick, though this seems more of a matter of luck than a permanent fix for everyone.

For the time being, no known workaround is available and reaching out to Apple support services seem to be the only way to go. Apple hasn’t publicly acknowledged the issue and it remains to be seen if a patch would be delivered anytime soon.
