I've been a fan of Subnautica since the game's launch, so when I heard a similar game will be released this year, I absolutely had to learn everything about it. In Other Waters is a brand new title from Jump Over The Age, a studio consisting of just one man – Gareth Damian Martin.

Martin is an accomplished games journalist who previously worked for Eurogamer, Kotaku, and US Gamer, who is also an artist, game designer, and writer. In Other Waters is a game that allows you to explore an alien ocean and discover extraterrestrial life.

Players take the role of an AI assistant who is helping xenobiologist Ellery Vas find her missing partner. The human race has exhausted the earth of its resources, so humanity must travel forth to alien worlds to ensure its survival.

After arriving on a strange planet, Ellery finds herself lost in an ocean of secrets with just a malfunctioning diving suit and you, an AI assistant. In Other Waters is a sci-fi game without violence, which focuses on wonder and exploration, fear and vulnerability, and the relationship between a long-dormant AI and its human pilot.

You will be building trust with Ellery by helping her achieve various goals, but fail to keep her oxygen levels healthy, and you’ll damage your relationship. Lose power and your dive will be cut short. Also, conversations can encourage intimacy, despite your answers being limited to yes or no.

Since this is a story-driven game, the relationship between the AI and Ellery unfolds over an impactful narrative uniquely interpreted by the player. The depths of the alien planet contain many secrets, so it's up to you to help Ellery find them.

If In Other Waters piqued your interest, then you'll be pleased to know Fellow Traveller and Jump Over the Age confirmed that game will be released on PC, Mac and Nintendo Switch in Spring 2020.
