Windows Store is still full of junk apps and useless items

Often described as a successor to Windows RT, Windows 10 S is an operating system that’s betting all-in on the Windows Store, as devices running it are not allowed to install Win32 software unless they upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

In other words, Windows 10 S users can only get apps from the Windows Store, as Microsoft continues its push for universal apps and thinks that the Store has already reached its maturity and comes with plenty of choices.

Only that this isn’t entirely true. The Windows Store is still full of junk apps and sometimes searching for an app returns results that show how worse things have gotten in the last months.

Google Chrome in the Windows Store

The screenshot you see here shows the results you get when searching in the Windows Store for “Google Chrome,” which without a doubt is one of the apps that many Windows 10 users are going to look for in the Store. Currently the top desktop browser, Google Chrome is not available in the Windows Store, so don’t be too surprised if some inexperienced users end up buying one of the items you see here by mistake.

Apps that are using the names and icons of famous programs have always been a problem for Microsoft in the Windows Store, but the company actually promised to pay more attention to quality rather than to quantity.

After extensive media coverage putting the spotlight on spam and junk apps in the Windows Store, Microsoft actually removed such listings, but lately, items that are worth nothing have returned only to try to trick people into believing they’re getting the real deal.

With Windows 10 S betting so big on the Windows Store, there’s absolutely no doubt that Microsoft has no other option than to remove the spam and make sure it never comes back, especially because this is the only place where users buying the Surface Laptop can find apps. Until the new spring cleaning starts, you'd better be careful what you get from the Windows Store.

Thanks for the tip, Mr. Chu!
