Renowned game development studio id Software has announced that RAGE and RAGE HD are free to download from the iTunes App Store for an entire week.

Rage is an upcoming first-person shooter game by id Software that will use the studio’s new id Tech 5 engine.

First shown as a demo on June 11, 2007 at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, the title was officially announced on August 2, 2007, at QuakeCon.

A trailer for the game was released on the same day. Ever since, only a handheld spin-off has been released for iOS.

“RAGE comes to your mobile device with the hit of the wastelands, Mutant Bash TV!”, reads id Software’s description on the iTunes App Store.

The developer continues: “This intense first-person rail shooter casts you in the starring role of a post-apocalyptic game show where you’ll be stalked by hungry mutants while you scour pulse-pounding levels for ammo and cash pick-ups.”

“Make a deal with J.K Stiles, the show’s menacing host, and see if you have what it takes to survive this carnage-filled carnival of death!”

RAGE was ccreated specifically for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, according to its makers.

It allows handheld gamers to catch an early glimpse of the post-apocalyptic universe, as the full (desktop) version of the game is yet to arrive.

Armed with either a pistol, shotgun or a machine gun, players will find themselves battling their way through three levels - “the mutant-infested Tenements, the lunatic-ridden Asylum and the not so-abandoned Bunker.”

All levels have four degrees of difficulty and players can perform hit-streaks and pick up “Bash Bux” to increase their performance.

In order to replay levels and beat their top score, gamers must complete Mutant Bash TV challenges.

“Experience high resolution graphics, including an exclusive HD version for the newest generation of iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, coupled with dynamic music and sound effects,” says iD Software.

Suitable for an iPhone 4, fourth-gen iPod touch, or iPad, the HD version of RAGE provides higher resolution textures that are optimally viewed those devices.

Version 1.21 of the game has been recompiled under iOS 4 for better OS compatibility. It’s optimized for the iPad 2 including HDMI TV output (so you can play RAGE on the big screen) and adds analog thumbsticks as a control option.

Melee mechanic has been added as a gameplay tweak and content perk. Players can trigger Melee by shaking their device forward.

A new splash screen is also available in the latest version - “updated legal text & correct id and Bethesda logos”.

Weighing in at 747 MB for the HD version and at 540 MB for the standard version, RAGE is rated 12+ and requires iOS 3.1 or later.
