Actor Omar Sharif, famous for his roles in the classics “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Dr. Zhivago,” has died. The star, who had lived in isolation these past few years, was 83 year old.

The sad news is confirmed by his agent, Steve Kenis, who tells the BBC that “He suffered a heart attack this afternoon in a hospital in Cairo.”

Kenis doesn’t offer more details. Sharif was 83 years old and part of the reason he had not been seen in public in a very long time was that, as his son revealed in May, he had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Sharif’s career spanned almost 7 decades and also included winning 3 Golden Globe awards, 1 Cesar Award and getting 1 Oscar nomination. He was a talented actor and a beautiful man, who attained fame in his home country before breaking into Hollywood in the 1962 epic “Lawrence of Arabia.”

He also starred opposite Barbra Streisand in “Funny Girl” and Julie Andrews in “The Tamarind Seed.”

Omar Sharif was also one of the best bridge players in the world. He was married only once and is survived by his son, Tarek El-Sharif.

Omar Sharif was an acting legend, whose legacy will survive the test of time.
