Apple may be working on ways to allow purchases of music videos, movies, and TV shows via iTunes on the iPhone OS 3.0

According to a post over at open salon, “...It appears that Apple will begin to allow downloads of movies and tv shows through the iPhone. This revelation [...] comes by way of an advertisement in the new ad supported version of the app Twitterfon released on 5/15/09.” “Three ads [...] scrolling across the top of the app were for 'iTunes Movies,' 'iTunes TV' and 'iTunes Movie Rentals,'” Kwame Jones writes.

Some notes from the source of the screenshots include findings such as:

– the titles of soon-to-be available movies and TV shows were listed, with active directories being broken down by genre. – the links to the actual movies turned up a message of “The item you’ve requested is not available.” – upon even closer examination, it appeared the pages in question were under construction at the time of the report.

The purported screenshots of iTunes video downloads for iPhone / iPod touch do not reveal whether these were iPhone OS 3.0 findings. Currently, Apple does not allow video downloads on the iTunes Store, but may include this option along with the release of a new handset model, as well as the next-gen OS 3.0. As noted by Chad Bonin over at the examiner.com, this would complete the list of download options for music, apps and now movies on the iPhone, eliminating the need to sync with iTunes on a desktop computer in order to get the desired content onto the device.

Softpedia note

There is little reason to believe any of this is made up, but given the hype surrounding iPhone OS 3.0, anyone could have photoshopped a bunch of iTunes listings adding and / or removing cases, tabs, etc. The images in question are small enough not to require detailed work, and could have easily been faked. However, Apple has every reason in the world to bridge a gap in its iTunes downloads where, most likely, there is demand.
