iStorage, a company specialized in building encrypted portable storage devices, just announced the availability of the diskAshur DT, “the world’s first” 3.5-inch external HDD featuring military grade hardware encryption and USB 3.0 support.

The diskAshur DT series includes three drives with capacities going from 1TB to 3TB, all of these being compliant with the FIPS PUB 19 standard.

This means, among other things, that the information stored on the drive is secured using AES 256-bit hardware encryption.

Users can access the data stored on the diskAshur DT HDD by entering a PIN access code via the built-in numerical keyboard installed.

iStorage’s latest encrypted drive is also equipped with a system to protect against brute force attacks (this self-destructs the data stored if a wrong PIN number is entered too many times) and uses a rugged aluminum casing and tamper-resistant epoxy-coated circuitry to guard against physical attacks.

The data stored is encrypted in real time, while the numerical keyboard is wear-resistant to protect against accidental liquid spills.

"Data security remains of paramount importance for organisations and individuals, especially in light of the ICO's powers to fine those guilty of serious Data Protection Act breaches,” said John Michael, managing director of iStorage.

“diskAshur DT's integrated digital and physical security functionality including real time AES 256-bit hardware encryption, 6-16 digit PIN access, onboard keypad and brute force hack defence mechanisms, deliver peace of mind for those looking for an ultra-secure mass storage solution," concluded the company’s rep.

Pricing for the USB 3.0 enabled diskAshur DT series of external hard drives starts at £179 ($280 US) for the 1TB versions and tops out at £279 ($437 US) for the 3TB model. All the drives are available right now.
