Supersedes all previous versions, fixes bugs

Many were skeptical about an iPhone firmware release this soon (including us), but as it turns out, Apple not only updated its MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops, but also rolled out firmware 1.1.4 for the iPhone/iPod touch. The update "includes bug fixes and supersedes all previous versions," Apple confirms, while the download is available through the update feature in iTunes.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that Apple is merely paving the way for the upcoming software development kit (SDK) that developers should use to work their magic. This is probably the reason why specific details concerning new features and tweaks aren't available yet.

Still, a number of iPhone users, particularly TUAW readers, have gone through the updating process and while some jailbroken users have experienced... nada, others claim a huge number of updates and a few new features as well.

This story should not be confused with/be referred to in any way relating to earlier news in which 1.1.4 was mentioned. Just over a week ago, Tiny-Code.com was updating its website saying they were working with Apple's SDK, hinting at firmware 1.1.4:

"Tiny Code no longer produces fixes or applications for firmware 1.1.3. We can't say much, but we are working with Apple and with their SDK for the next firmware release and SDK applications and we shouldn't be missed for long. We will no longer update our Installer.app repo for legality reasons and you should see us soon on iTunes," said the website at that time.

That statement later turned out to be false. Tiny Code developer Kelly commented on the Mac Rumors Forums claiming that Apple ordered them to take down the website as they had violated their NDA with the Cupertino folks: "Tiny-Code never had any relations with Apple, Inc. or any other division of Apple. Never had the new firmware or any pre-SDK pack. Certainly never signed any NDA."

TUAW is also reporting that Zibri's jailbreak works with iPhone 1.1.4. Softpedia doesn't encourage jailbreaking your Apple phone or iPod touch, or running non-licensed applications on them.
